Friday Night Lights originated in Westville, Illinois in 1928. All the football games were played on Saturday afternoons, but the miners in this coal town could not make the games because they had to work. They decided to hang lights and painted the ball white and held the first HS night game on Friday, September 21, 1928. While others had experimented with temporary lights before 1928, this was the first night HS football game between two High School teams under permanent lights that counted towards the record. Westville beat Milford 26-6. Over 5,000 people attended the game in the town of 3,000, including college coaches and presidents to see if it is something they would like to try.
